Every character objective—or what I call a purpose—is more than a thought about something you want to achieve.

In this video, I examine the final two qualities that every purpose must possess:

• Sense data.
• The impression of the mental and physical actions needed to achieve it.

Together, these complete the six qualities that distinguish an ordinary thought from a purpose.

These ideas come from the Science of Acting—a practical framework for understanding how human beings think, why they pursue the things they do, and how that knowledge can be applied to creating a character.

What Every Character Objective Must Contain
Why do some character objectives help your performance while others seem to achieve very little?

In this video, I examine two more qualities that every character objective—or what I call a purpose—must possess in order to function as purposes do in real life.

You’ll discover:

* What it means for a purpose to be perfect, ideal and unique within the circumstances.
* How purposes exist as pictures and impressions.
* How understanding these qualities can help you choose more effective character objectives.

The ideas in this video come from the Science of Acting—a practical framework for understanding how human beings think, why they pursue the things they do, and how that knowledge can be applied to creating a character.

How To Make Your Character Objectives Work.
Most actors know that their character needs an objective—or what I call a purpose. But how do you know whether the thought you’ve chosen will actually function as one?

In the Science of Acting, a thought must possess six specific qualities before it can function as a purpose. In this video, I examine the first two:

• A purpose must be expressed as a want or want to be.
• A purpose must be a change that I want to achieve.

These are not acting techniques or creative preferences. They are characteristics of how purposes function in real life.

This is Part 1 of a three-part series exploring the six qualities that make a thought function as a purpose.

Part 2: Why Some Character Objectives Feel Stronger Than Others
Part 3: What Makes a Character Objective Feel Real?

Why Most Character Objectives Don't Work: Part 1
Actors use terms like objective, motivation, intention, want and need all the time—but are they all describing the same thing?

In this video, I explain what a character objective really is and why, in the Science of Acting, I use the more precise term purpose. Understanding this distinction gives you a clearer way to analyse a character’s thinking and the reasons behind what they say, think and do.

This video also lays the foundation for the rest of the series, where I explain the six qualities every purpose must possess to function as purposes do in real life.

What Is A Character Objective?
Audition nerves do not begin when you walk into the room or press record for a self-tape. They begin earlier, during your anticipation of the audition.

In this video, I look at audition nerves through The Science of Acting: how fear can be produced by imaginary pictures and impressions of failure, and how Foreburn — aware anticipation — can help the actor move attention away from fear and towards creative thinking.

Rather than simply trying to “calm down” or “think positively,” the actor needs to understand what they are anticipating, what thoughts are producing the nerves, and how to prepare their state of mind for the audition.

The Science of Acting is not just about analysing scripts or characters. It is also about developing the actor’s awareness, so they can see their own thinking clearly enough to stop being limited by it.

Your Audition Nerves Start Before The Audition
Why do actors sometimes stop serving the story and start serving themselves?
A childhood moment on stage helped me understand one of the biggest problems in acting.
Episode 1 of my series The Science of Acting – My Journey, where I explore the experiences that shaped my understanding of acting.
When I was 11, a fellow actor fell off the stage in the middle of a play. Everyone broke character and laughed. I didn’t. My only concern was getting her back on stage and continuing the story.
Decades later, that moment helped me understand something fundamental about acting: many young actors begin by serving the story, but as we grow older our own concerns—belonging, being admired, fitting in—can quietly take over. Acting stops being about the character and becomes about the actor.
In this first episode of The Science of Acting & Me, I reflect on how that childhood experience revealed the difference between acting that serves the story and acting that serves the ego.
This episode begins a series exploring how The Science of Acting helped me rediscover the freedom and imagination that drew me to acting in the first place.

Why Actors Stop Serving the Story (And Don't Realise It)
Only in acting can someone with profile and zero experience be treated as a “professional.” The Science of Acting treats acting like the profession it should be — based on knowledge, training, and understanding.

Acting: The Only Job You Can Do With No Training
Most acting training relies on subjective opinions, not knowledge. The Science of Acting replaces confusion with clear, objective points of reference.

Why Acting Teachers Contradict Themselves
Acting is full of vague words no one defines properly. The Science of Acting fixes that with clear, precise terminology actors can trust.
